History of Caves Beach Tennis Club
Mrs. Lesley Castledine had the idea of forming a junior tennis club and with the support of friends, called a meeting. This was held in the old surf club house and was a very well attended, and had strong support from the local Progress Ass. An adult committee was formed and Council provided the site for 2 clay tennis courts and said it was up to us to raise the funds and construct the courts and club house.
Don Elbourne was able to arrange for the army transport to help us. They brought in truck loads of gravel and topdressing and spread them. We had a large working bee to dig post holes, erect fences, build the clubhouse etc. The workers were Ted Rhodes, Mick Dunlevy, Bill Vernon, Dennis Moss, Stan Hook, Tom Francis, Mel ford, Graham Campbell, Don Williams, and Doug Carley.
We raised money by holding ladies netball days, organised by Loris Kirk. We charged 20 cents per player. We also sold plants and shrubs, home made lamingtons and toys. Puller's local dancing studio put on a concert for us in the RSL hall at Swansea. We also did a window wash, 100 homes paid us 1 dollar each to wash their external windows. This was a very strong community effort and a lot of fun. As the construction of the courts progressed, Council helped by contributing to the cost.
When the courts opened for play we had 115 junior members 10 to 18 years of age. There were several mothers who coached the juniors. Some where; Lesley Castledine, Sandy Mason, Lorraine Staley, Lyn Williams and June Hook.
When we had our junior tournaments and championships we hired the courts on Lake Rd t cater for our large number of players. Ted Rhodes used to make our trophies.
The Junior Club became a senior club in 1979.
